Optional Assist
Assist that knows the chapter you are in, never required
Companion and Blocs use your open scene and Plan bible. You bring the OpenRouter key. Nothing lands in the draft until you accept it.

Writing studio first, Assist second
Most “AI novel writing” tools lead with generation. Blocwrite leads with the manuscript: chapters, Plan, reader links, checkpoints, and export. Assist is an optional layer you invite — never the reason the studio exists.
Open Companion from Write · Plan · Companion, then connect OpenRouter for chat, Suggest, or Blocs. Choose the model; usage bills through your provider. Stay on Write alone and every novel writing software feature still works the same way.
Companion — context from the open scene
Generic AI chats start blank. Companion reads the chapter on screen, nearby scenes, and bible entries first. You can pressure-test pacing, dialogue, or a reveal without pasting your novel into another tab and explaining the cast from scratch.
- Scene-aware prompts tied to the manuscript
- Answers stay outside the draft until you apply them
- Works alongside — never instead of — your own prose
Blocs — preview-first scene assists
Type \ in the draft for an Idea or Scene Bloc. Blocwrite suggests text from your scene context and stops at a preview. Accept a line, a beat, or a longer passage—or discard it. A lever you pull on purpose, not a co-author rewriting over you.
Proofread without losing voice
Select a passage for grammar and line-level help when you want a second pass. You stay the editor of every change. No silent whole-chapter rewrites.
Humanizer — clean Accept, clean Format export (Pro)
On Pro, when you Accept Assist text, and again in Format export, Humanizer strips invisible Unicode marks (zero-width characters, BiDi overrides, steganographic selectors) without calling AI or changing your wording. Instant, local, automatic — then keep drafting in Studio.
Shipping print? Pro Format also builds print cover templates from your trim and page count, and Continuity watches the draft for slips.
What we deliberately do not do
- Auto-rewrite whole chapters without your confirmation
- Train models on your manuscript
- Require AI to draft, share with beta readers, or export EPUB
- Hide manuscript tools behind AI credit packs
BYO key vs bundled AI credits
Bundled credits can feel convenient until a long novel burns through them. Blocwrite’s subscription covers the studio. AI spend stays on your OpenRouter account, so you can use free models, paid models, or nothing at all.
Start with the novel writing studio, then connect AI when you are ready. 7-day Lite or Pro trial (card required), then Lite £7.99/mo · Pro £10.99/mo. After signup, the in-studio Tour walks the desk.
AI novel writing — FAQ
Does Blocwrite require AI to write a novel?
No. Chapters, Plan, checkpoints, Share, and EPUB export work with Assist turned off. Format Studio is Pro and does not need an AI key. Connect OpenRouter only when you want Companion or Blocs.
How does Companion differ from a generic AI chat?
Companion reads the open chapter, World entries, and nearby scenes. Answers stay outside the draft until you apply them, not a blank chat window in another tab.
What are Blocs in Blocwrite?
Continue or Scene from the writer menu opens a preview-first assist. Blocwrite suggests text from your scene context; nothing inserts until you accept it.
Who pays for AI usage in Blocwrite?
You bring your own OpenRouter API key. Model usage bills through your provider, including free tiers where available. The Blocwrite subscription covers the studio, not bundled AI credits.
Who is optional Assist for?
Authors who want a writing studio first and scene-aware help second, without generation credits driving the product.
